Twitter Buys Stories App Developer Chroma Labs. Could Twitter Stories Be Coming?

Twitter has purchased Chroma Labs, who is responsible for the Chroma Stories app. The app is a short-form video and photo creation tool that offers Stories templates and filters that is meant to create Stories on various social sites.

It has been confirmed by Twitter that the team behind Chroma Labs will be joining Twitter’s product, design, and engineering teams. “Their expertise in creative tools that help people connect and share completely align with our work to serve the public conversation,” said Twitter VP of Design and Research Dantly Davis in a Tweet.

Other platforms have had Stories for a while now, including Instagram, Facebook, as well as YouTube. Snapchat was the first to bring the feature to life. As a major social platform, Twitter had lacked a a ephemeral, storytelling feature. But now that Chroma Labs is under their belt, this could soon change.

Twitter says the Chroma Labs team will be, “Working to give people more creative ways to express themselves in conversations on Twitter.” This could mean there is a Stories feature coming, or even more creative tools for posting content. Having a new creative feature to benefit from could really help marketers make their Twitter content sparkle.

According to the Chroma Labs website, the company is shutting down its business effective immediately, but the Chroma Stories app will continue to work for anyone who has downloaded it until there is a “breaking change” in a future iOS update.

Chroma Labs co-founder John Barnett also developed the Instagram Boomerang feature.

Twitter did not disclose any financial details on the acquisition.
